35 Thoughts as I Turn 35

All week long I've been hearing Deana Carter singing in my head, "I still remember when 30 was old..."  I was 15 when "Strawberry Wine" came out, and 30 did seem so old at that point in time. And now, here I am turning 35 today...but I'm far from old, right? Right?!!?

Hands down, my 30s have been the best decade of my life thus far. It's the new 21...with a little cash to spend! I got married, I became a mom, I've got a great job, a fabulous family and incredible friends. I really have no complaints...except that time is flying by faster than I ever imagined was possible. Don't get me wrong, there are bumps in the road and challenging days {weeks!}, but it just recently hit me that I am happy...truly and genuinely happy. I'm in a very good place, and I am so incredibly grateful for this crazy, chaotic life I lead.

35 Life Lessons on My 35th Birthday

Today, as I begin my 36th trip around the sun {I had to seriously think about that for a minute...it's my 35th birthday, so that means I'm beginning my 36th year...#deepthoughts}, I thought I'd share with you some things I've learned, observed or experienced along the way...
  1. Birthdays are a blessing. Getting older is part of life’s natural progression…and it’s obviously better than the alternative. Celebrate big or celebrate small…but no matter what, you must eat cake on your birthday!

    Birthday Cake

  2. Live within your means. Better yet, live below your means. Saving money is crucial! Maintain a savings account {that is fairly liquid} at a level sufficient to cover at least six months of general living expenses…just in case!

  3. Use your head as more than a hat rack. Think for yourself…outside of the box. Don’t just go along with the crowd. Think before you speak or react.

  4. You’ve got to be a friend to have a friend. This goes back to the good ‘ole Golden Rule…

Do Unto Others as you would have them do unto you
    via

  5. Don’t accept a counteroffer from an employer after you’ve resigned to take another job. A recruiter shared this article with me when I was faced with this decision, and it really stuck with me. Sure, it’s incredibly flattering to receive an offer for a promotion or raise if you’ll stay at the current job, but why weren’t you worth that extra money and more prestigious title before you quit? Plus, the reasons you had for wanting to leave the original job in the first place will still exist.

  6. There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Pulling out my economics background for this one {I did learn something in college!}. Simply put: you can’t get something for nothing. Digging a little deeper into it: when faced with a decision, you must carefully consider what you’re giving up by choosing one option over the other.

  7. YouTube is a form of continuing education. Tutorials and how-to videos on anything and everything you could ever want to learn are available on YouTube. Don’t ever stop learning!

  8. Dress for success. Dress for the position you want, not the position you have. In the professional world, always err on the conservative side. When you look your best, you feel your best and, thus, produce the best results.

  9. On the same note, quality shoes are worth the extra money. Life is too short for painful shoes, no matter how cute they may be.

  10. Lipstick can change your entire look. Even if you aren’t wearing any other makeup, a little lipstick {or gloss} will make you look {and feel} pulled together.  Plus, bright/bold lipsticks will instantly make your teeth look whiter.

  11. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst. No one wants to think about death or disability, but planning for unexpected tragedies is especially imperative if you have children. Buy life insurance. Write a will that designates legal guardians for your children. This is an incredibly sensitive topic and a difficult decision to make…but if you don’t do it, it will be left up to the state. It’s worth the money to consult with an estate planning attorney to aid with this process.  Don’t put it off!

  12. There are three sides to every story: your side, the other person’s side and the unbiased truth. It’s all about perspective.

  13. Spend as much time as possible with your grandparents…and truly listen when they’re talking to you. No amount of money can buy the knowledge they’ll share with you in a simple conversation.

Landon & me with Grandma & Granddad, May 2016

  14. A wedding planner is worth their weight in gold.  Not only will they get you through the planning process {and save you significant money due to the relationships they’ve built with vendors}, but you’ll also be able to enjoy your entire wedding day without worrying about a thing.

  15. Proofread...and then proofread again! Get it right when you write. Incorrect spelling and/or typos on your resume/cover letter/any related documents will most likely send your application straight to File 13 {i.e. the trashcan!}.

    via

  16. The cost of alcohol is inversely correlated with the severity of the headache you’ll have the next morning. The cheaper the booze, the worse the hangover. Buy the good stuff!

  17. Your toughest critics are often also your biggest fans. These are the people who see potential in you that you may not even see yourself. They push you hard because they believe in you and refuse to allow you to settle for less than you deserve. Stay close to these people and thank them for helping you achieve success.

  18. The Five Love Languages book is legit. Figure out your own love language as well as your partner’s. They may be different {most likely will be}, but that’s ok. Learn to speak your partner’s love language…and when you start to struggle with it, read the book again.

  19. Don’t underestimate the power of hand-written notes. Dropping a hand-written note in the mail is a small gesture that makes a BIG impact.

  20. “Good Enough” doesn’t cut it. You’ll never get ahead by just getting by. You’ve got to go above and beyond what is expected of you to get noticed.

  21. Pets are part of the family. The pure excitement they show when they see you and the unconditional love of a pet is priceless.

  22. Be on time. Better yet, show up early! It’s disrespectful of others’ time when you’re late.

  23. Don’t ever forget where you came from. You wouldn’t be who you are today if it weren’t for your background and upbringing. Show gratitude to everyone who helped you along the way, most importantly, your parents.

"Back where I come from...I'm proud as anyone..."
the Gyp Hills of Barber County, Kansas

  24. Pay your dues. Nobody starts at the top. You’ve got to work to get there. Hard work will pay off in the long run. The harder you work, the luckier you get.

  25. College is as much about growing up as it is the actual education. It’s the first time you’re out on your own, fending for yourself, fully responsible for your own decisions and actions. How you deal with this newfound freedom will likely evolve throughout your college experience. Somewhere along the way you'll figure out how to manage your time {balance your social and academic schedules} and money. In fact, you may even think you're ready for "the real world" by the time you graduate. Turns out, "the real world" is a little different than college life.

  26. At some point during the college years, you’ll probably realize your parents were always right. They had your best interest at heart in all of the rules and restrictions they set. When you finally accept that your parents are the smartest people you know, tell them! This will be a big turning point in that relationship.

  27. Maintain your faith. Keep God at the center of your life. Continuously pray. It’s easy to turn to God in times of distress, but don’t forget to thank Him for all of your blessings as well.

  28. Make yourself indispensable. Whatever you’re doing, do it well…better than anyone else. Make sure you’re adding value. Put yourself in a position so that you can’t be easily replaced.

  29. You’re responsible for your own happiness. The basis of true happiness comes from within. Once you reach a point where you’re happy with your life on your own, you’ll be surprised how quickly other things fall into place.

    via

  30. Own up to your mistakes, and sincerely apologize when it’s necessary. "Sincerely" is the key word. Mean what you say, and let it be obvious that it comes from the heart.

  31. Revel in your success for a moment…and then do more! Don’t stop trying to better yourself just because you’ve accomplished one goal. Dream big. Set the next goal and keep learning and improving.

  32. Surround yourself with the right people. It's hard to soar with the eagles when you’re surrounded by turkeys.

  33. The bigger the risk, the greater the reward. Don’t be afraid to take chances. On the other hand, fully assess the risk and make sure you’re comfortable with the possibility of losing what you have invested {time, money, emotions}.

  34. You’ll never be 100% “ready” to have kids. If you know you want to have a child, but you’re “waiting for the right time” {when you have enough money, when you’re far enough along in your career, when you’re grown up/responsible enough}, I guarantee that time will never arrive. I can also promise that once that tiny babe is in your arms, you’ll be ready to do whatever it takes to give that child the very best life you possibly can.

  35. Take lots of photos…and make sure you’re IN some of them. One day, all your children will have is pictures…and they won’t care how your hair looked or if you were wearing makeup…they’ll just want to see you!

Cheers to 35!

What are some life lessons you've learned along the way?

Currently...

Just a little look into what I have been/am currently up to...

Feeling: every emotion in the book as we rapidly approach our baby boy's first birthday! How is it that he is going to be O.N.E. on Friday?!!? #BittersweetForMomma

Working on: anything and everything related to H's farm-themed birthday party. This non-crafty momma is giving it her best effort! #AnythingForThatLittleMan

Watching: the Olympics! Ok, ok...so I've only watched bits and pieces of the Olympics, but that swimming race between Lilly King and the Russian was pretty intense! #USA

Listening to: Kenny Chesney's new song featuring P!nk, "Setting the World on Fire." I'm loving it! I never would have expected this collaboration, but it's a pretty fabulous tune!  You can listen here.  #EverybodyLovesCountry

Celebrating: that my coworker passed Level 2 of the CFA exam! #CongratulationsKeaton

Enjoying: every single minute I can spend with my "baby" boy...he's going to be be a "toddler" before I know it! #SoakingItIn

Reading: my "to do" list that includes approximately 4,367 tasks...with approximately four checked off as completed.  #GetToWork

Anticipating: the arrival of our family this weekend as they come to celebrate H's big day! #TravelSafe

Loving: this crazy, chaotic stage of life that we're living right now. As cliché as it sounds, it is 110% true! Last week was one of those weeks when everything went wrong {sick baby, broken AC, flat tire, hit & run car accident, hot water heater went out...just to name a few}, but I realized somewhere in the midst of it all that I must be in a very good place because I didn't let any of it get to me {except for the roofers mauling my flowers...I cried over that!}. Like everyone else on the planet, we have good days and bad days...but the good FAR outweigh the bad. I wouldn't change a thing...except maybe add a couple hours to each day and figure out a way to slow down time! #RealLife

Thanking:  YOU for continuing to read this little bloggety-blog!

These Are My Confessions...

Today I'm linking up with Jess for a little Thursday confess sesh.

I confess...

  • We got in trouble with the pediatrician for leaving the amber necklace on H while he sleeps. I swear the thing truly works to help babes through the traumatic teething phase, so we're not about to get rid of it! Dr. Diana says they're totally fine for babies to wear...just not while they're sleeping! Noted.
  • I didn't even know the Grammy Awards were on Monday night. Apparently I live under a rock...a DVR'd rock because I can't remember the last time I watched live TV.
  • Speaking of TV and DVR...I've started to watch this week's episode of The Bachelor three times, and I still haven't made it past the first 10 minutes. I'm dangerously close to cheating and reading the spoilers. Someone convince me to wait it out...
  • I love love love that we've had such a mild winter, and I know I'll regret saying this the moment it turns cold...but I really think we need just a few days of harsh cold in order to kill all the ick-tastic bugs that we don't want around when spring and summer actually arrive.
  • I'm a snoozer...at least once, usually twice each morning. I set my first alarm 20-30 minutes before I actually have to get up. What good does this do me? Why don't I just allow myself to get full-on restful sleep until I truly have to get up?
  • I had Monday off for President's Day and I took a vacation day on Tuesday, yet I still cannot wait for the weekend! #IsItFridayYet?

These are my confessions!

Just a little look into what I have been/am currently up to...

Loving: that today is my last day of work this week!

Reading: instructions to put together Huston's toys. Actually, that's a lie. I WISH I was reading the instructions...but they don't use words, only pictures. Pictures that I have a very difficult time interpreting. Just give me some words to read, and I'd have this stuff built already!

Listening to: "Riser," by Dierks Bentley {listen & watch the video here}...I cannot get enough of this song! I've been loving it for awhile now, but I just watched the video for the first time, and...TEARS.

Watching: absolutely nothing...there is no time for TV! Our DVR is full of shows I need to catch up on, but I just haven't found the time. This sounds like a good project for January! #CouchPotatoComingSoon

Anticipating: the any-day-now arrival of my newest nephew! #BabyLukens2

Working on: packing for our trip to Kansas for Christmas. It's really too bad that I'm the Worst.Packer.On.The.Planet!

Enjoying: all of the Christmas/holiday cards we've received! Definitely one of my favorite things about the holiday season!

Smelling: the fabulous scent of my newest candle, Mahogany Balsam, from Bath & Body Works. Perfect for the season!

Hoping: that Baby Huston will travel well {as well as can be expected of a four-month old} on our journey to Kansas to celebrate Christmas with Ryan's family.

Thanking: my husband for being such an amazing dad to our baby boy.  Ryan has been on a hunting trip the past couple of days, and being home by myself with our little midget reminded me just how much he does for Huston...and for me! #GratefulWife

Wishing: everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!

A little look at what I'm up to these days.

Currently, I'm...

Loving: the fabulous, warm spring weather!

Reading: lots of baby books...books about pregnancy, being a mom, etc. SO.MUCH.TO.LEARN!

Thinking: where has this year gone? How is it already April?

Wanting: a tan! I'm so tired of having pasty, pale skin. The sunburn that I got last weekend is fading nicely...no peeling {yet}...but it seems to be fading back to the original shade of pale, leaving no color behind!

Needing: to get out and walk EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. I must focus on this and make it happen while the weather is nice!

Listening to: "I Got the Boy" by Jana Kramer {listen here}. I've heard bits and pieces of this song over the past few weeks, but I finally heard the entire song last night. A great country tune...I'm loving it!

Working on: making some furniture/decor decisions so we can get started on the little guy's nursery.

Wishing: I could sleep better at night so I wouldn't be so tired during the day!

Anticipating: going to the Academy of Country Music Awards on April 19th. CANNOT.WAIT!

Wondering: what I'm going to wear to previously mentioned ACM Awards...who knows how big this baby bump will be in three weeks?!!?

Planning: a long weekend getaway {"babymoon"} with the husband. We've got a few destinations in mind, but it's not 100% set...so any ideas/recommendations are welcome!

It's the Most Awesome Time of the Year

The holiday season truly is the most wonderful time of the year! There are so many awesome aspects of the holidays, but nothing tops getting together and spending time with the people you love the most! Beyond all the obvious awesomeness {celebrating Jesus' birth, beautiful Christmas trees, exchanging gifts, fabulous food, etc.}, there are lots of little things that warm my heart during the cold days of December.

  1. My Ugg slippers...see more about my obsession with them here.
  2. A hot bubble bath to ease the chill after being outside in the cold.
  3. Receiving {and sending} Christmas cards!
  4. The scent of a Fresh Balsam candle
  5. Avoiding the crazy crowds by shopping online...and free shipping!
  6. Getting my hair blown out...and not having to wash it again for several days.
  7. Being all cozy under a blanket in front of the fire catching up on DVR'd shows.
  8. Sunday afternoon naps!
  9. Hallmark and/or Lifetime movies that always have a happy ending.
  10. Finding/designing an ornament that represents something from this year...and hanging it on our tree on Christmas morning.

Tour Through Blogland

Winding Road

Welcome to my stop on the "Tour Through Blogland!"  I've seen some of my favorite bloggers featured on the tour over the past few weeks and found several new blogs to follow through those posts! I was so excited when sweet Jessi from Jessi's Design invited me to be part the tour {check out her stop on the tour here}.

Martin Manifesto Blog

What am I working on right now?

Ummm…my next blog post? Actually, I’m not even working on that…yet! Unfortunately, I’m not one to pre-plan and schedule out my posts. I’ve made some notes for a couple of “Leslie Loves…” gift guides, so I’ll count that as my current project-in-progress. I’ve also been thinking about changing the layout/design of this little bloggety-blog. With that being said, I’m wide open to any suggestions/recommendations for blog designers!

How does my work differ from others in its genre?

Is my blog even in a genre? It's kind of a big 'ole mix of things: a little bit of fashion, a little bit of beauty, a lot of my life. I guess it's different just by the fact that it's mine. My thoughts and my perspectives are what make it unique. I write from my heart about whatever is on my mind. No two blogs are the same...that's what is so great about blogland.

Why do I write/create what I do?

I first started blogging {on January 1 because I need defined beginnings like that} because a couple of my friends encouraged me to share products I love. Thus, the "Leslie Loves..." series was born. There's nothing better than hearing from a reader who bought one of my recommended products and loves it as much as I do! I also wanted a way to document what's going on in our lives. This little blog has become a sort-of scrapbook I can always come back to for memories.

How does my writing & creative process work?

I pretty much just wing it, which explains why I don't post EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. I'd love to post every day, but some days I just don't have anything relevant to say {I think the proper word for that is writer's block}...and some days I just don't have time {Ryan would tell you it takes me FOR-EV-ER to complete a post}. I write about what's going on in my life, things I'm interested in, products I love...whatever comes to mind on any given day. I guess the short answer to this question would be that I haven't quite defined/formalized my blogging process...yet. Wait, let's be honest...that's never gonna happen!

Your next stops on the tour...

{just click the photo or the link below each box to visit these fabulous blogs}

Take a minute to check out these ladies' blogs...you'll be glad you did. Don't forget to say hello while you're there {I can't be the only one who LOVES getting new blog comments...right? Right?!!?}

And a BIG thank you to Jessi for featuring my little corner of blogland on her tour stop!

A Lil' Bit of Awesome

It's the little things in life that really make a difference. I hear this all the time...and I know it to be true...but, more often than not, I take for granted the simple little things that can {and do!} truly brighten my day. Soooo...today I am making note of 10 things that bring a smile to my face.

Little things that make me happy

  1. Finding money in an old purse.
  2. Getting in the car just as my favorite song starts to play.
  3. Receiving a handwritten note in the mail.
  4. Breakfast for dinner.
  5. Mid-day texts from the husband...especially songs of the day.
  6. Free shipping.
  7. Lily's excitement when I get home. The unconditional love of a dog is priceless.
  8. When someone "likes" or comments on this lil' bloggety-blog or any social media post.
  9. Arriving at a stop light just as it turns yellow...and accelerating to get through it.
  10. Picking up someone at the airport.

Celebrating: Kiley's birthday! Happy Happy Happy Birthday to my older sister! Here's to making the last year of your thirties the best one yet!

Working on: decorating for fall. Although we lived in our house last fall, I was so preoccupied with wedding planning and everything wedding-related that I didn't really do much in the way of fall-themed decor. I'm making up for it this year.

Listening to: "Perfect Storm," by Brad Paisley {listen here}...it's been a while since I've loved a Brad Paisley song, but I think this one might change that!

Anticipating: the Season 3 premier of "Nashville"...one week from today!
via

Smelling: the fabulous fall scent of my newest candle, Sweater Weather, from Bath & Body Works. LOVE it!

Wishing: I was eligible for a phone upgrade. Guess I'll be waiting until June to own the iPhone 6 because I refuse to pay $550 to get it now. I keep telling myself I've never been an early adopter anyway...but that doesn't seem to be helping!

Wanting: the iPhone 6...duh!

Thanking: my A-MAZing family and friends for making my 33rd birthday perfect!

Planning: my picks for the office college football pick 'em pool.  As the husband says, "this pool is legit." It's against the spread...AND I have to assign confidence points to each game.
I won the first week.
Performed decent the second week...at least well enough to maintain the overall lead.
Last week was a disaster. I tumbled to 7th place.
BUT...I do have documentation to prove my brief reign at the top:
"Rock Chalk" is such a great name for a football pool, right?
Hey...just proving my loyalty to the crimson & blue!
And now I must get back to planning my strategy to claw my way back to first place!

A to Z

I first saw this type of post on Erin's blog {Living in Yellow} and decided I wanted to "borrow" her idea. {Hopefully she believes "imitation is the best form of flattery!"} I didn't realize it would take me weeks {literally} to come up with self-descriptors for each letter of the alphabet.

Leslie Lukens, Leslie Martin

A:  Austin, Texas - my home from 2005 -2008 {grad school}.

B:  Bond Girl - specifically credit analysis of municipal bonds. It's what I do for a living.

C:  Cake - quite possibly my favorite food on the planet...or chips & salsa, which also begins with C, so I'll go with both!  Oh...and I also love champagne!

Toto, Halloween Costume, Kansas
Halloween a few years back...
Lily was the perfect Toto!

Walking on Sunshine

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to Meagan from All the Joys for nominating my little bloggety-blog for the Sunshine Award!

The Sunshine Award is a lot like the Liebster Award. I take that back...the Sunshine Award is exactly the same as the Liebster Award...well, except for the whole name thing. It is a way for bloggers to promote other blogs to their readers...you know, just spreading a little blog love around the World.Wide.Web. Although it was hard nearly impossible to come up with 11 new random facts about myself/questions for my nominees, I did it all in the name of blog love {plus I was terrified of having seven years of bad luck if I didn't pass it on}. Sooo...if you get bored with info about me {impossible, right?!!?}, feel free to skip to the end and check out the fabulous blogs that I've nominated for this bright and {sun}shiny award!

Rules of the Game:
  1. Post 11 random facts about yourself.
  2. Answer 11 questions from your nominating blogger.
  3. Nominate 11 bloggers to receive the award.
  4. Post 11 questions for the bloggers you've nominated.
  5. Notify them of their award.

Let's get this party started...11 Fabulously Entertaining Random Facts about Me:

  1. I'm 98% certain I could live on chips and salsa. Well, I'd probably need dessert too because I have a sweet tooth that OWNS me!
  2. Ridiculous things that I have ZERO control over and/or have ZERO effect on me keep me awake at night. {Where is that damn Malaysian plane?!!?}
  3. Lists make me feel organized...so what if I can't find the list after I make it!
  4. Dry shampoo is my best friend!
  5. I believe there is a song lyric that goes with every situation you could possibly find yourself in. {See the title of this post}
  6. My favorite nail color is OPI's Big Apple Red.
  7. I am a terrible in-store {as opposed to online} shopper. If it's not on a mannequin or the front of a rack, I most likely will not see it.
  8. Fruit roll-ups and/or fruit snacks are the bomb.com in my book!
  9. I've recently come to love hydrangeas...they last FOR-EV-ER!
  10. I'm a chronic snoozer...there's no way this girl is getting out of bed the first time the alarm clock sounds!
  11. Taking naps is my favorite hobby.

    1. How long have you been blogging?
I started blogging this year, on January 1, 2014 to be exact. My Type-A, borderline-OCD personality required a start date that truly signified "beginning." {Go ahead and laugh...I fully acknowledge--and partially accept--the ridiculousness of my ways!

    2. What is your favorite part about blogging?
As cliché as it is, my favorite aspect of blogging is the connections I've made. I also love that the blog is sort of a scrapbook/journal that is documenting what is going on in our lives...something I can come back to when my memory is even worse than it is now.

    3. Do you like where you live? If no, where would you like to live?
I love Dallas. The only thing I'd change is the proximity to our families {wish they were closer}...soooo, perhaps they should just pack it all up and move south!

    4. What is your favorite TV show -- of all time?
Of all time?!!? Hmmmm...I did love me some Saved By the Bell...and it seems like I watched that show for years and years and years. I'm currently obsessed with Nashville.  In fact, that obsession is so great that I've gotta say it's in the running for "ALL.TIME.FAVORITE!"

    5. Dogs or Cats? Why?
Dogs...because I think cats are tricksters!

    6. What is your favorite season?
Summer...because I'd most definitely rather be hot than cold...and it probably helps that I work in an office and don't have to be out in the blazing hot temps all.day.long.

     7. Are you an early bird or night owl?
    Definitely NOT an early bird...I.HATE.MORNINGS! {Poor husband...I am trying to be nicer in the mornings these days!}

     8. What do you think is the best and worst thing about being a woman?
Ummmm....let me come back to this one...in a few days!

    9. If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
    George Strait

    10. If you were given the opportunity to go back in time and change one thing in your life, would you?
Nope! I truly believe "everything happens for a reason." Everything that has happened in my past {good and bad} has molded me into who I am today...and I'm pretty happy with that girl.  Wait, wait, wait...now that I think about it, I'd be much more willing to take naps when I was little...I'd give anything for a nap RIGHT.NOW!

    11. Coke or Pepsi?
    Diet Dr. Pepper
