Life Lessons to Live By

I don't use Pinterest all that much. To be honest, it kind of overwhelms me...and oftentimes gives me anxiety that I'm a failure of a human being because I haven't invented my own slow-cooker recipe while remodeling my bathroom so it can display my favorite quote written in the best font for fall on my DIY chalkboard all while wearing the most stylish outfit for 2016 and styling my hair in a perfect messy bun. Please tell me I'm not the only person who feels like a total under-achiever/slacker after logging in to Pinterest. Anyway...on to the actual point of this post...I was scrolling through some of my old "pins" {like from waaayyyyy back in Pinterest's early days, 2011-ish}, and I realized I had some pretty legit thoughts on my (Mostly) True Statements board. It got me to thinking about life lessons and advice that I've taken to heart...and inspired this little blog post.

And then...today I randomly landed on Mattie's blog and saw that she and Lexi are hosting a Weekly Lessons link-up. Perfect timing!

I received A LOT of fabulous advice from my parents along the way {and still do to this day}, but these must have been the ones on constant repeat because they stand out the most in my head...
  • If you can't say something nice, don't say it at all.
  • The harder you work, the luckier you get.
  • Under-promise and over-deliver.
  • Say what you mean, and mean what you say. {especially applicable to "I'm sorry" and "thank you"}
  • Shoot for the moon...even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.
And last, but certainly not least...
  • the good 'ole Golden Rule: treat others as you want to be treated.

What's the best advice and/or life lesson you've ever received?

THREE Cheers for Friday!

TGIF! And once again, I only have the Friday THREE... probably because there's not a whole lot of interesting going on in my world given the sub-zero {ok, maybe not quite that extreme} temperatures that keep me locked inside the house, on the couch, under blankets, binge-watching every.single.show on the DVR.  Maybe I'll be more fun/exciting when spring finally rolls around...no promises though!  :)

I know, I know...I live in Texas; it can't be that cold! Oh, but it is! And my blood is thin. I just don't do cold very well.  Period.Dot.Done.

Anyway, enough of my whining {for now}...

One:  Family Photos {Sneak Peek}

You might remember a few weeks back when I was stressing about attire for family photos. Well, we opted for the grey/blue/yellow theme...and it worked! It was freeeeeeezing cold and ridiculously windy the day our photos were taken, but based on this sneak peek we got yesterday, I think we're going to be very happy with the pics! Thank you, thank you, thank you to Lulu's Pictures for capturing the images. More photos to come...

Two: Blogiversary Giveaway Winner

Thank you times infinity to everyone for reading and supporting this little blog over the past year...and for playing along in the blogiversary giveaway.  The winner of the giveaway was Kelly Delrosso! Congrats, Kelli! Your gift package will be on its way to you this weekend!

Oh, Hey 2015!

Back to work today! And I'm estimating it will only take me until March to start using 2015 as the year when I write out the date...always a little slow to catch on to that change. Maybe I'm subconsciously living in denial that time flies by so fast???  Anyway...I may still be dragging a bit from all the holiday excitement {or perhaps I just don't have anything relevant to write about...nah, that can't be it!}, so I bring to you the Friday THREE today rather than the Friday five...

One: Happy New Year!

I've gotta say, 2014 was a pretty great year {check out my Top 10 of 2014}, but here's to making 2015 even better! We're looking forward to all that the coming year has in store for us! Cheers to the new year!

The Current Friday Five

We're down to the final countdown...less than one week until Christmas {and still so much to do!}. Here's a quick look at what's going on in my corner of the world...

sparkling Christmas Tree

Celebrating: Tess' birthday! Happy 10th Birthday to our sweet niece!

Working on: finishing the Christmas shopping! Ahhhhh...crunch time! I'm close to being done, but I'm frantically trying to come up with something great for the husband. Any ideas?!!?

Thanking: Chesson from A Southern Twenty-Five for the fabulous package I received as part of the #2014OrnamentExchange. I'll always think of Chesson and her love of Coastal North Carolina {and the half marathon she just completed there last weekend...CONGRATS on that huge accomplishment!} when I hang this ornament on our tree!

I'm so grateful I was paired with Chesson for the ornament exchange. It's been so fun to get to know her, and I have no doubt that we'll continue to stay in touch!

Anticipating: sleeping in this weekend! I can't remember the last time I didn't set an alarm clock. These dark circles under my eyes can't wait to catch up on some sleep!

Loving: these blog posts...

Happy Friday!

High Five for Friday!

This week has flown by faster than most! It's been busy...but a good busy. Anyway, let's move along to five random things currently going on in my world.

High Five for Friday

One: Christmas Decor

It's finally coming together and looking a lot like Christmas around our house.  More pics to come next week!

Two: Family Christmas Celebration

Most of Ryan's family will be here this weekend for an early Christmas celebration. We'll miss the Malsons {his sister's family that lives in Idaho}, but I'm sure we'll at least FaceTime with them...and talk about how we'll all be together next year for Christmas. Anyway, I'm very excited to have a house full of guests for the weekend, but I'm a little nervous too. We've never even hosted a dinner...let alone a holiday dinner. It'll be great no matter what because the important thing is that it'll be time spent together with family.

Three: Christmas Shopping Progress

I definitely prefer online shopping over fighting the crazy Christmas crowds in the stores {or even just trying to find a parking space!} Proof of my online shopping success can be seen in the number of packages delivered to our house on Wednesday...

There are still several more to come...and hopefully a couple of them will arrive today {before our guests!}.

Four: Family Photo Attire

My mom has planned an extended family photo session when we're all home for Christmas...and now we're trying to decide which colors to wear to make the group photo look cohesive but not matchy-matchy.  You know what I mean? I'm thinking shades of blue and gray with yellow accents, but we're open to ANY and ALL ideas...so please please please offer any suggestions you might have!

Five: Blog Love

  • Katie Elizabeth's Chocolate Pie Recipe. I will be making this tomorrow.
  • Have an Extra Christmas Card?, by Mia @ Make Me Up Mia. Mia's little brother, Caleb, was in a terrible ATV accident more than a year ago and is currently undergoing intense rehab in Florida. Check out this post and send a little holiday love to brighten Caleb's {and Mia's parents'} day. #prayformayberry
  • Things I Know to Be True @ P!nk Persistence. A good reminder of the things that are really important in life.

Have a fabulous weekend!

It's the Most Awesome Time of the Year

The holiday season truly is the most wonderful time of the year! There are so many awesome aspects of the holidays, but nothing tops getting together and spending time with the people you love the most! Beyond all the obvious awesomeness {celebrating Jesus' birth, beautiful Christmas trees, exchanging gifts, fabulous food, etc.}, there are lots of little things that warm my heart during the cold days of December.

  1. My Ugg slippers...see more about my obsession with them here.
  2. A hot bubble bath to ease the chill after being outside in the cold.
  3. Receiving {and sending} Christmas cards!
  4. The scent of a Fresh Balsam candle
  5. Avoiding the crazy crowds by shopping online...and free shipping!
  6. Getting my hair blown out...and not having to wash it again for several days.
  7. Being all cozy under a blanket in front of the fire catching up on DVR'd shows.
  8. Sunday afternoon naps!
  9. Hallmark and/or Lifetime movies that always have a happy ending.
  10. Finding/designing an ornament that represents something from this year...and hanging it on our tree on Christmas morning.

For the Love of Friday

Happy Friday, Friends!

One: NCAA Basketball Preseason Rankings

My beloved Kansas Jayhawks are ranked No. 5 in the USA Today preseason men's basketball coach's poll. The Jayhawks have three home games before traveling to Indianapolis to face the No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats in the Champions Classic on November 18. Rock Chalk!

You can take the Jayhawk out of Kansas, but you can't take the Rock Chalk from the Jayhawk

Two: Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon

I'm sending well wishes and positive vibes to Kelli, my sister-in-law, as she runs her first full marathon tomorrow in Denver. She's worked so hard and been so dedicated in her training. I have no doubt that she is well-prepared to conquer 26.2 miles...but I know she's a little nervous {if nothing else, just from the thought of losing all of her toenails!}. I'm so proud of her...and very excited for her to accomplish this HUGE goal!

Good Luck, Kelli!

This precious little guy {and his daddy} will be cheering for his momma along the way...

Three: Napa Valley Recommendations???

I mentioned earlier this week that we're going to Napa in a few weeks to celebrate our first anniversary. SO.EXCITED...but a little overwhelmed by the seemingly infinite number of wineries and restaurants to choose from. Do you have a favorite? Any and all recommendations are welcome! Please and thank you!

Four: Kansas City Royals

I can't say I'm much of a baseball fan...but I'll hop on the wagon to cheer for the Kansas City Royals. It's pretty exciting that they're headed to the World Series for the first time since 1985! I even found this little gem in my closet...

Five: Blog Love

, by Aimee @ Aimlessly Elegant. Aimee shares the story  of two friends who are raising funds to create a line of "kick-ass shoes for women battling cancer."
  • Say something. Please for the sake of all that is holy, say something, by Amber @ Mr. Thomas and Me. Amber is an incredible writer...I'm a big of all of her posts. This particular post totally changed my perspective on the song "Say Something" {A Great Big World/Christina Aguilera}.

  • Have a great weekend!

    A Lil' Bit of Awesome

It's the little things in life that really make a difference. I hear this all the time...and I know it to be true...but, more often than not, I take for granted the simple little things that can {and do!} truly brighten my day. Soooo...today I am making note of 10 things that bring a smile to my face.

Little things that make me happy

    1. Finding money in an old purse.
    2. Getting in the car just as my favorite song starts to play.
    3. Receiving a handwritten note in the mail.
    4. Breakfast for dinner.
    5. Mid-day texts from the husband...especially songs of the day.
    6. Free shipping.
    7. Lily's excitement when I get home. The unconditional love of a dog is priceless.
    8. When someone "likes" or comments on this lil' bloggety-blog or any social media post.
    9. Arriving at a stop light just as it turns yellow...and accelerating to get through it.
    10. Picking up someone at the airport.

    Friday Favorites

Oh Friday...so good to see you again. I think I may just lock myself in my house this weekend to avoid Ebola {note to self, I NEVER should have started reading about it...because now I can't stop!}. Anyway, enough of that! On to happier things...

    One: A Few Current Favorites

I decided October 1 was as good a day as any to make the switch to fall nail polish. I went with my tried-and-true, Lincoln Park After Dark.

I know I already talked about my obsession with these booties here, but I just want to confirm how much I L-O-L-O-L-O-V-E {yeah, just like Ashlee Simpson} my TOMS Desert Wedge High Booties now that I've had a change to wear them a couple times.

This dress from Piperlime's new collection seems perfect for work. I decided I wanted it in green, but my size was sold out...yesterday. I got deterred a bit this morning while writing this post because the small was BACK.IN.STOCK, so of course I had to order it!

    Two: Virgin America Flight Discount

I'm so excited that Virgin America will be flying in/out of Love Field beginning October 13...and even more excited that they're offering a 15% discount for trips to/from Dallas if you simply enter a contest by October 6 {25% discount if you share your love on Facebook and Twitter}. Check out the details here.

    Three: "Shake It Off"

Texas High School Football. I didn't grow up here, but it didn't take me long to realize just how serious Texans take high school football. It's a BIG.DEAL. The Prosper High School football team didn't get off to a great start this season, but they're trying to "Shake It Off."

    HA-LAR-ious, right?!!?

    Five: Blog Love

    • No-Bake Confetti Cake Batter Truffles by Dara @ The Southern Thing. These little treats look DE-LISH...and seem so easy to make! My last recipe attempt was a flop, but that's not going to deter me from giving this one a try!
    • The Closet Clean-Out by Natasha @ Hello! Happiness. Natasha shares tips and tricks she learned from a professional wardrobe consultant.
    • Everytime I Hear that Song... by Pinky @ P!nk Persistence. I could totally relate to this post because, as I've mentioned multiple times on this lil' bloggety-blog of mine, lyrics are pretty much the story of my life. I love how hearing a song can totally take you back to a specific moment and/or place in time.

    Happy Friday!

    High Five for Friday!

Happy Friday! Just a short and sweet little post to share five current events in my world!

    One: Southwest Kansas Pro-Am

The husband is back in Kansas for the Pro-Am golf tournament. I'm excited for him that he gets to go see friends/family while "working"...but I'm a little sad that I'm not there too. Here's to hoping he plays some great golf!

Two: And while Ryan's in Kansas...

This little guy {and his parents} is {are} his host{s}:

Nais with Uncle Ryan...2 pretty special guys in my world!

I might be a little jealous of both of them for getting to spend time with each other!

    Three: Megan's 30th Birthday Celebration

Her actually birthday was a couple of weeks ago, but we're finally celebrating the big 3-0 this weekend! I'm so excited to officially welcome Megan to the 30 Club!

    Four: Countdown to Mini-Vacation

Next week at this time we'll be in Nashville with Chris and Linds for a nice little little long weekend getaway. Ryan and I have never been Nashville, so we can't wait to check it out! Advice/recommendations welcome...I'd love to hear from you!

    Five: Blog Love

    • That Time My Diaries Were Published by Mandi at Girl in Beta. First of all, Mandi is a fabulously entertaining writer. I genuinely love all of her posts. This specific post tells the story of how her diaries from high school ended up in a published book {a published book that has a blurb from Alanis Morissette!}. Check it out...and then go buy the book!
    • {Monthly Faves} July Loves: this is a monthly link-up hosted by Mia and Kelli. It's so fun to see what other bloggers are currently loving. A recommendation/review from someone who actually uses a product is the best way to learn about new "stuff" that I truly NEED in my life!

    Have a fabulous weekend!

Today I'm linking up with "Oh, Hey Friday!" {hosted by The Farmer's Wife and September FARM}, "High Five for Friday" {hosted by Lauren Elizabeth}, and "Friday Favorites" {hosted by All the Joys}. Thanks, ladies, for hosting!
